UK Defense Ministry announces possible Russian aggression in Baltic States

British Defense Minister Michael Fallon said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has an opportunity to use the security services to test operational efficiency of the North Atlantic Bloc in the actions aimed at preventing possible attacks, Joinfo.ua reports.

The Minister is convinced that in the Baltic states there can be used the same scenario as in Ukraine, where the conflict has been fueled by the Russian agents, aggressive pro-Russian propaganda and cyber espionage. Fallon said that the Alliance has to be prepared to respond to possible Russian aggression in "whatever form it takes." He recalled the increasing number of interceptions of Russian military aircraft near the borders of NATO and the arrest of the Estonian police officer Kohver in Russia.

In September last year, the Russian special services reported the arrest of the Estonian police officer Eston Kohvera in the border zone in the Pskov region, and accused him of spying. Tallinn said that the police officer was abducted from the territory of Estonia.

It should be recalled that recently, in Latvia, there unfolded a separatist agitation. In particular, in Latgale, the eastern region of Latvia, there appeared mysterious pro-Russian activists convincing the locals that the region should secede from Latvia and join Russia.

Some activists visit the houses of local residents and give them information leaflets convincing them of worthwhileness of "the Crimean scenario" – that is, separation of the region from Latvia and joining Russia.

Media suggests that the party Russian Union is responsible for the campaign. Some time ago, it was already engaged in distribution of campaign materials in Daugavpils, the largest city in Latgale. Also, Russian Union welcomed the annexation of Crimea.

Later pro-Russian separatist propaganda began to spread in the Internet space. Latvian law enforcement agencies became aware of the fact that in the social network Facebook there was posted an image of the flag with the inscription Latgale People's Republic, as well as a map of Latvia with separated Latgale.

The Security Police noted that public dissemination of ideas aimed at violation of the principle of territorial integrity of the country meets Russia's geopolitical interests.

Taken an increasing number of cases when the image of the Latvian flag was used in such a provocative way that does not meet the interests of Latvia, the Security Police urged people to report such facts.

Based on this, Prime Minister of Latvia Laimdota Straujuma said that some elements of the hybrid war were observed in the information space of the country.
