Russia uses tactics of hybrid war against Latvia

The foreign press notes that hybrid war used by Russia against Ukraine is already seen in Latvia. Some elements of this tactic are observed in the information space of the country. It was stated by the Prime Minister of Latvia Laimdota Straujuma, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to Delfi.

"We notice the statements about human rights in Latvia distributed by Russian officials. This is one of the elements. Our security agencies are working. I am fully confident in their ability to prevent cyber attacks as well as various provocations that can be expected," she says.

Laimdota Straujuma adds that the Latvian authorities are closely monitoring the developments and the region is intensified by NATO military contingent.

Recently, in Latvia, there unfolded a separatist agitation. In particular, in Latgale, the eastern region of Latvia, there appeared mysterious pro-Russian activists convincing the locals that the region should secede from Latvia and join Russia.

Some activists visit the houses of local residents and give them information leaflets convincing them of worthwhileness of "the Crimean scenario" – that is, separation of the region from Latvia and joining Russia.

Media suggests that the party Russian Union is responsible for the campaign. Some time ago, it was already engaged in distribution of campaign materials in Daugavpils, the largest city in Latgale. Also, Russian Union welcomed the annexation of Crimea.

Later pro-Russian separatist propaganda began to spread in the Internet space. Latvian law enforcement agencies became aware of the fact that in the social network Facebook there was posted an image of the flag with the inscription Latgale People's Republic, as well as a map of Latvia with separated Latgale.

The Security Police noted that public dissemination of ideas aimed at violation of the principle of territorial integrity of the country meets Russia's geopolitical interests.

Taken an increasing number of cases when the image of the Latvian flag was used in such a provocative way that does not meet the interests of Latvia, the Security Police urged people to report such facts.

It should be noted that Latgale is the eastern region of Latvia, which occupies a quarter of the whole country and has a high percentage of the Russian population (38.9% as of 2010).
