Steinmeier: Germany gives Ukraine weapons if Minsk negotiations fail

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that if the current intention of the Normandy Four regarding peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Donbas were in vain, the European Union would move to the discussion of the issue of granting Ukraine lethal weapons, Joinfo.ua reports.

He stressed that discussions on this topic were held last weekend at the Munich security conference.

"In this case, of course, the issue of arms transfers will also be discussed in the framework of Europe," Steinmeier said.

However, the Minister believes in the success of the upcoming talks in Minsk. In his opinion, this is the only option to stabilize the situation in the east of Ukraine.

"I can only promise that we will do everything to ensure that the hoped for by many conference in Minsk actually takes place," said Steinmeier.

It should be noted that recently, U.S. senators are more and more inclined to believe that Ukraine must be provided with lethal weapons. According to the Senate member John McCain, if Moscow did not stop, it would challenge the security of NATO. That is why the United States and NATO allies must provide Ukraine with defense lethal weapons.
