The Israeli authorities want to seize some of undeveloped territories in Jerusalem being in the possession of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission (REM) in favor of the state. The abbot Theophane (Lukyanov), the head of mission in Jerusalem, stated it at the meeting with Alexander Kolpakov from the Administrative Department of the President of Russia on 5 February, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to the World Forum of Russian-Speaking Jewry.
"Our land needs immediate protection. Russian property may be in the wrong hands and become the property of the Israelites," Theophane said. According to him, the Israelis are planning to build an observation deck and a funicular on the territory of the Mount of Olives, and use several other lands owned by the REM.
The abbot pointed at another problem area – Aleksandrovsky Metochion in Jerusalem's Old City. Now the land is owned by the organization, which separated itself from the Foreign Palestinian society. But the problem of the return of the land to the rightful owner remains unresolved.
Kolpakov said he would go into the question regarding protection of Russian property in Israel after his return from Israel to Moscow. He visited the REM with working visit together with the representatives of the government order of the Russian Federation and Russian Ambassador to Israel Sergei Yakovlev.
