Ukrainian Parliament asks International Court in Hague to launch investigation of crimes in Donbas

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine appealed to the International Criminal Court to "bring senior officials of the Russian Federation and the leaders of DPR and LPR terrorist organizations to criminal responsibility".

Today, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court with regard to the crimes against humanity committed from February 20, 2014 to the present day. The resolution was supported by 271 MPs, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to the official website of the Ukrainian parliament.

This decision was made in order to appeal to the International Criminal Court to "bring senior officials of the Russian Federation and the leaders of DPR and LPR terrorist organizations to criminal responsibility."

The resolution states that since the spring of 2014 against Ukraine there has been conducted military aggression by Russia and the militants supported by this country. During these actions there was annexed Crimea and Sevastopol, there was occupied a part of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, there were killed thousands of Ukrainian citizens, including children, thousands of people were injured. There was destroyed the infrastructure of the whole region and hundreds of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes.

The statement also notes that the last damaging act of violence by the military forces of the Russian Federation and the militants supported by Russia was the shelling of peaceful civilians of the city of Mariupol with Grad missile systems on January 24, 2014.

"The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine instructs the Cabinet of Ministers and the Attorney General"s Office to collect the necessary materials and proper evidence base for the address to the International Criminal Court in accordance with Paragraph 3 of Article 12 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on the crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by senior officials of the Russian Federation and the heads of DPR and LPR terrorist organizations, which led to very serious consequences and mass murder of Ukrainian citizens," states the website of the Ukrainian parliament.

Before that, the Ukrainian MPs have decided to deprive Viktor Yanukovych of the status of the President of Ukraine.
