New sanctions against Russia may deprive Russia of the right to host the FIFA World Cup. At least, it is a suggestion of the Ukrainian side. Thus, during the session of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs in Brussels Konstantin Eliseev, the Ukrainian representative in the European Union suggested to deprive the Russian Federation of the right to host the 2018 World Cup due to the military aggression of Russia in Ukraine.
According to Eliseev, such a measure should become a part of tougher sanctions.
"Now there is a need to take decisive steps according to numerous decisions of the EU and the concept of three concurrent goals (economic pressure on Russia, support for Ukraine, forcing the Russian Federation to dialogue)," Eliseev said.
According to the proposal of the representative of Ukraine, the assistance to Ukraine should include political, financial, economic, humanitarian and military support.
Last year, the head of Russia-2018 Organizing Committee and Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said that the organization had a budget deficit.
Earlier it was reported that the bookmakers have begun to actively take bets that in 2015 Russia will be deprived of the right to hold the World Cup in 2018. British bookmakers estimated the chances of such an outcome as 1 to 8. It is interesting that the chances for Qatar to lose the right to host FIFA World Cup is 2.5, which is much more likely than in the case with Russia.
In addition to this bet, one of the leading bookmakers offers its customers to make 99 more bets on what may happen next year.
