During the Economic Forum in Davos the German government has made an attractive economic proposal to Russia in exchange for ending the aggression in Ukraine. It was informed by the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung, with reference to the statement made by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel at the world leaders' meeting in Davos.
The journalists writes that in her speech Merkel declared her readiness to begin negotiations between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union led by Russia on the formation of a comprehensive free trade zone.
"We are ready for this," the Chancellor said, adding that she intended to create a "bridge" between the sides.
In addition, Merkel said that the main condition for such cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Community was stabilization of the situation in Ukraine. After that, the Vice-Chancellor of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel raised the question of what they can offer to Russia after the conflict settlement in the Donbas.
"One answer is the fulfillment – or the chance for fulfillment – of Putin's geopolitical pipedream," he said.
The political elite of Germany often mentions "a free trade between Lisbon to Vladivostok" – the desire for this very trade relations formula was expressed by Putin. The members of the German government insist that such an international economic format be possible only when Moscow fulfills Minsk agreements. Recently, before the meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France in Berlin Angela Merkel said that the prospect of a truce in Ukraine had become remote.
