European Parliament not to recognize DPR and LPR as terrorist organizations

The European Parliament took the initiative to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation. This is evidenced by the draft resolution developed by a group of deputies from the European People's Party.

European Parliament not to recognize DPR and LPR as terrorist organizations

This resolution is to be considered on Thursday. The document proposes to strengthen sanctions against Russia in the event of its further actions aimed at destabilizing the situation in Ukraine.

The scope of further restrictive measures may be extended. They may affect the Russian nuclear sector and limit the ability of Russian companies to conduct international financial transactions.

At the same time, after all the expectations of the Ukrainian community, the resolution contains no regulations regarding recognition of the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR as terrorist organizations, despite the fact that some of the deputies have supported this claim.

However, in this situation the compromise was found – the fact that some of the attacks were carried out by separatists was recognized.

"(European Parliament) condemns terrorist attacks and criminal activities carried out by separatists and other armed groups in the east of Ukraine," the document noted.

Also the draft resolution notes that the sanctions should be a part of a wider EU approach to the issue of relations with the Russian Federation.

"Maintenance, reinforcement or reversibility of the EU's restrictive measures depends on Russia's own attitude and on the situation in Ukraine," the resolution states.

The European Parliament plans to vote on the document on Thursday, January 15. Before it, the EP has to carry out a debate on the issue.
