New sanctions against Russia: EU asks Turkey to join “pressure on Putin”

So far, Turkey has condemned the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russia only in words, but it did not take any real steps in order to express its support for Ukraine. In this regard, the EU intends to negotiate close cooperation with the Turkish authorities on the issue of deterring Russian aggression against Ukraine. Turkey should not undermine new sanctions against Russia imposed by the EU.

New sanctions against Russia: EU asks Turkey to join "pressure on Putin"

According to media reports, the official delegation of the European Union will operate in Turkey on Monday and Tuesday. The Head of the delegation is Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The European side wants Turkey not to undermine new sanctions against Russia, but to join them. The Turkish government has been in talks on Turkey's accession to the European Union since 2005. The visit of the European delegation is to give a new impetus to Turkish-European relations, joinfo.ua reports.

It will be the most high-level delegation to Turkey from the European Union over the past few years. Now the European side wants new sanctions against Russia not to be undermined by the Turkish side. In particular, it is referred to the export of products from Russia, which Turkey is using for its benefit.

It is reported that the sides will also discuss the ways of cooperation in the fight against the Islamic state. Thus, the European side intends to discuss the militants' non-entrance to the territory of Turkey who use it as a transit base.

Earlier it was reported that the Russian leader Vladimir Putin came to Ankara. Back then, the Turkish and Russian sides discussed the construction of a new gas pipeline to Turkey. This project will be implemented instead of South Stream.
