Germany celebrates the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

Today Germany starts a three-day celebration of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

According to the press, the memorial event will be headed by the Chancellor Angela Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany. The Germans remember those who died while trying to escape "over the wall."

The celebrations will be attended by the former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, whose policies of publicity contributed to the destruction of the symbolic barrier between East and West.

In honor of the anniversary, the German capital will be divided again in two by a wall of white balloons. The celebration will end on November 9 with a grand concert in Berlin.

It is to be recalled that from 1961 to 1989 the Berlin Wall divided the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic. The length of the wall on the border was 155 km, including the territory of Berlin – 43 km.
