Tajikistan may pardon 10,000 prisoners

Tajik Parliament approved an amnesty that would allow releasing thousands of prisoners. The State President Emomalii Rahmon suggested adopting an amnesty in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Tajik Constitution adoption.

Attorney General of the country Sherhon Salimzoda who presented the bill, said that more than 10,000 convicts and those who are now in jail would be freed.

Those prisoners who are serving sentences for treason, terrorism, espionage, rape and murder are not subjected to the amnesty.

Since the declaration of independence of Tajikistan in 1991, it will be 16th amnesty. In 2011 during the last amnesty in Tajikistan, there were released about 4.3 thousand prisoners.
