On Thursday, October 2, the Latvian Saeima supported temporary suspension of the issuance of residence permits for the Russian citizens in exchange for investments and submitted it to the relevant committees, informs Radio Svoboda.
The Latvian Parliament notes that the initiative aims to eliminate the threats to the state. The proposal includes suspending the issuance of residence permits to resolve the crisis in Ukraine.
The national unity "All for Latvia/Fatherland and Freedom" was the initiator of legislative changes. The authors of the bill say that people who had received residence permits have certain economic power, as well as the opportunity to influence the political and social processes in Latvia.
According to the immigration law of Latvia, residence permit in the country can be obtained in exchange for the purchase of real estate, the value of which exceeds € 250,000.
Five-year program to provide foreigners with residence in Latvia in exchange for investments has been in force since 1 July 2010. Since then, Latvia has issued 11,754 residence permits in exchange for investments. 90% people who have received residence permits within this program are immigrants from the former Soviet Union.
It is to be recalled, September 24, it was reported that Latvia saw a threat in Russia"s promise to protect its citizens. The deputy chief of the Latvian Security Police Inta Ulmanis said that, in his opinion, the increase in the number of Russians requests for the temporary residence permit threatens Latvia.
