January 26, in Brussels, at the EU-Ukraine Association Committee meeting at the European Parliament, the Head of Division for bilateral relations with the Eastern Partnership countries in the European External Action Service Dirk Schuebel has said today that the European Commission “very soon” will make a legislative proposal to provide visa-free regime for Ukraine, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to UNIAN agency.
“The specific date for the legislative proposal has not been set yet, but this will happen very soon”, – stated the European diplomat.
In this connection Schuebel said that it is very important “that Ukraine has fulfilled the commitments in the first quarter of 2016 in order to simplify the discussion [of this issue] at the Council of Europe and persuade those Member States that still have little doubts.”
It should be recalled that in the resolution published on January 21, the European Parliament welcomed the progress in Ukraine on its “chosen path of closer political and economic integration with the European Union.”
MEPs urged Ukraine’s leadership to fulfill its commitments to fight “endemic” corruption, which remains the biggest challenge to its reform efforts.
