The Chinese police detained about 50 lawyers and human rights defenders on charges of creating a “criminal organization,” Joinfo.ua reports referring to DW.
About 50 lawyers and human rights defenders were detained by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security on charges of creating a “criminal organization.”
In some cases, lawyers were detained under the pretext of charges of hooliganism. The Ministry of Public Security of China said that the lawyers were members of the “big gang” that threatened public order.
Sophie Richardson, the China director at Human Rights Watch, called such accusations a “new reality” under Xi Jinping.
Detentions and arrests of the human rights defenders were made a week after the adoption of China’s new law on national security, which has been widely criticized in the world.
