The U.S. position towards Ukraine should be more vigorous in order to prevent Putin from making something stupid, including the attempts to regain his former grandeur, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to a statement of the former CIA chief Michael Hayden made for the newspaper Le Figaro.
“Putin is behaving arrogantly, but he does not have good cards in this game. Aggressiveness is a serious problem for a short, but not long term, because Russia is a weakening power. All the current attributes of the country – a thriving industry, entrepreneurs, democracy and even gas and oil – are in dangerous position. The only tools of the Russian power belong to the Soviet era: the veto in the UN, and what is left from the military and nuclear power,” Hayden said.
“I admit that the military operation carried out in Crimea was very professional. And that means that we must be very vigilant, especially in the near future. I would like the position of America towards Ukraine be more vigorous to prevent Putin from making some stupidity, without underestimating his abilities. In our place, I would arm the Ukrainians,” Michael Hayden said.
Earlier, in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della sera the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said he was negotiating with the U.S. over the issue of providing Ukraine with lethal weapons.
