"The UN is strongly committed to working with the European Union and all other players in helping to discourage the phenomenon of foreign terrorist fighters, who pose dangers within and beyond Europe," said Secretary-General, speaking at a meeting of the Security Council for Cooperation with the European Union.
According to him, the UN and the EU must work together towards a peaceful political settlement of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which threatens not only the country but also Europe and the entire international peace and security, Joinfo.ua reports with reference to the Russian media.
Ban Ki-moon remarked the interaction between the UN and the EU in several areas, including in Mali and the Central African Republic, where UN peacekeepers are shoulder to shoulder with the EU forces. Ban also called the European Union a "key partner" in negotiations on resolving the Iranian nuclear issue, the Middle East Peace Process, as well as in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue.
"At a time when we face multiple crises, strengthening this partnership for peace, human rights and sustainable development is more necessary than ever," UN Secretary General said. He also urged the European countries to overcome internal frictions.
