The decision on defense transfer to the Armed Forces of Ukraine was 99% ready, said Mikheil Saakashvili, Adviser to President of Ukraine and former president of Georgia, on air of one of the Ukrainian television channels.
"The main thing we are asking the United States is to give Ukraine defensive weaponry. Almost everything is on our side, public opinion is on our side," said ex-president of Georgia.
"Getting defensive weapons will be a strong signal in order to save thousands of lives. To stop further Russian aggression. We all know that Putin will try now to seize not only Mariupol, but the whole southern flank, then he will try to bring down the government in Kyiv. Ukrainian government needs to defend and protect its safety," Saakashvili said.
According to him, now the United States is close to the arms transfer to Ukraine, but clear requirements are needed. "The United States is a democratic country, so it is very important that the claim to give Ukraine weapon be publicly sounded in the Congress and the Senate. All U.S. media announce it now," he added.
"When President Poroshenko stated it in the Congress during his triumphal speech in September last year, for many it was a surprise and a lot of congressmen did not even want to listen about it. Now, the decision is 99 per cent prepared. I do not know when the decision will completely be taken, but I hope it will happen in the near future because Ukraine has a little time," Saakashvili said.
