Philip Breedlove, NATO's Supreme Commander in Europe says that now the constructive relations with the Kremlin are impossible due the conflict in the Donbas. In an interview for Die Zeit posted yesterday the American general said that Russia was doing everything to bring Ukraine back into its zone of influence, Deutsche Welle reports.
President Vladimir Putin uses unconventional warfare to achieve his goals.
According to Breedlove, "the Russians use all the tools available to the state: hard diplomatic pressure, powerful disinformation campaign, hidden military capabilities and "little green men".
Breedlove names strong economic pressure on energy supplies, demands for early repayment of debts as other instruments of Russian pressure on Ukraine.
NATO's commander also says that Russia provides the rebels with tanks, artillery and missile defense systems that undermine not only Ukrainian security, but also the security of the entire Euro-Atlantic space.
Breedlove says that so long as Russia is not ready to comply with international law, it is impossible to cooperate with Moscow "in the usual way." According to him, the conflict in the Donbas has no military solution. In order to solve it, it is needed to conduct peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv. In this case, Breedlove adds that "the initial border of Ukraine should be respected."
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg admitted the presence of Russian troops in Ukraine.
