Experts have no doubt that a Russian submarine headed to the North Atlantic to the shores of the United States is "dragging about" off the coast of Britain, Independent reports.
"I would put my money on it being a Russian attack submarine with cruise missiles on a patrol taking it past Britain and into the north Atlantic and on the US eastern seaboard. The Russians are trying to threaten NATO and NATO is threatening them right back by showing that we can shadow them, and that if they tried this for real we would be able to kill them," Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear policy expert with the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
UK Ministry of Defense appealed to the U.S. and asked to track the submarine off the coast of Scotland.
The anti-submarine frigate HMS Somerset and two P-3 Orion patrol aircraft of the U.S. Ministry of Defense are already sent to the region.
Now the Russian submarine is searched for by surface ships, submarines, and Hercules aircraft. The searches are conducted in close collaboration with NATO.
The publication stresses that "visits" from Russian subs were "happening quite often" off the north and west coasts of Scotland.
