As reported, all five people are supporters of ex-president Marc Ravalomanana. These people had been convicted of conspiracy against the ex-mayor of Antananarivo Andry Radzueliny, who had ousted Ravalomanana in 2009 and became the president.
The decision to release political prisoners as a sign of reconciliation was made after the meeting of the new president of Madagascar Hery Rajaonarimampianina and four his predecessors, including Radzuelinu and Ravalomanana. Overall, on the island there are about ten political prisoners and all of them will be released until the end of the year.

After last year's presidential election, which led to restoration of the country's political stability, Madagascar has been restored as the member of the SADC and the African Union.
